Sentences classified by structure: one or more clauses.
Sentence Structure — How sentences are built and transformed.
1. Simple: one independent clause — She sings. 2. Compound: two independent clauses joined by and/but/or/so — She sings and he dances. 3. Complex: one independent + at least one dependent clause — She sings when she is happy. 4. Compound-complex: two independent + one dependent.
Compound sentences join equals with coordinators; complex sentences add dependent clauses with subordinators. Choose based on the relationship of ideas.
