Full stops, commas, apostrophes, semicolons, colons and quotation marks — and when to use each.
Sentence Skills — Detection, correction, rearrangement and translation.
1. Full stop (.) — ends a statement: She is a teacher. 2. Question mark (?) — ends a question: Where do you live? 3. Exclamation mark (!) — shows strong feeling: What a lovely day! 4. Comma (,) — separates items, clauses and addresses: I bought tea, rice and sugar. 5. Apostrophe (') — shows possession (Ravi's book) or a contraction (don't). 6. Semicolon (;) — joins two closely related independent clauses: I was tired; I went to bed. 7. Colon (:) — introduces a list or explanation: He bought three things: milk, bread and eggs. 8. Quotation marks (" ") — enclose a person's exact words: She said, "I am fine."
Punctuation tells the reader where to pause, stop and how a sentence is organised. In exams, punctuation errors are a quick way to lose marks — especially missing full stops, wrong apostrophe use and joining two sentences with a comma (comma splice).
