Verb + preposition/adverb with a special meaning.

Verbs — Verb forms, modals and non-finite verbs.

Rules

1. Examples: give up (quit), look after (take care of), put off (postpone), turn down (refuse), come across (find by chance). 2. Separable: turn the light off / turn off the light. 3. Inseparable: look after the children (not "look the children after"). 4. With pronouns, separable verbs must split: turn it off (not "turn off it"). 5. Meaning is often idiomatic — learn as vocabulary.

Explanation

The meaning of a phrasal verb is not the sum of its parts: "give up" ≠ give + up. Context decides meaning: "break down" (stop working / lose control).

Phrasal verb = क्रिया + preposition, जिसका अलग अर्थ होता है — give up (छोड़ देना), look after (देखभाल करना)।

Practice Questions

Q1. Choose the correct form: "Don't ___; I believe you."

Answer: give up

💡 Give up = stop trying; here in the sense of abandoning the effort.

Q2. Complete: "She ___ her old car to buy a new one."

Answer: sold off

💡 Sell off = sell something (often cheaply).

Q3. Translate into English: "वह धूम्रपान छोड़ चुका है।"

Answer: He has given up smoking.

💡 Give up + gerund = stop a habit.
