Tenses — Expressing time: present, past and future.

Rules

1. Form: past form of verb — went, played, wrote. 2. Negative: did not + base — He did not come. 3. Question: Did + subject + base — Did you see him? 4. Uses: finished actions (I met her yesterday), past habits (He always carried an umbrella), past sequences (She got up, dressed and left). 5. Signal words: yesterday, last week, ago, in 2019, then, when.

Explanation

Past simple is for actions completely in the past with no link to now. Irregular verbs must be memorised: go→went, see→saw, take→took.
