Direct and indirect objects receive the action of the verb.

Rules

1. Direct object: receives the action — I wrote a letter. 2. Indirect object: receives the direct object — I gave him a book (him = indirect, book = direct). 3. Only transitive verbs take objects. 4. Object pronouns: me, him, her, us, them. 5. Indirect object can move after a preposition: I gave a book to him.

Explanation

A sentence with a transitive verb and no object is incomplete: "She bought" needs an object — "She bought a dress".
