The main verb carries the core meaning of the verb phrase.

Rules

1. The main verb carries the core meaning of the verb phrase. 2. Every verb phrase has exactly one main verb. 3. Main verbs can be action verbs (run, write, eat) or state verbs (know, love, seem). 4. In "is writing", "writing" is the main verb and "is" is the helper.

Explanation

The main verb tells what the subject does or is. Helping verbs only add tense, mood or voice around it.

Answer: does

💡 Third-person singular → does.

💡 Writes carries the action.

Q3. Identify the main verb in 'She has been reading for two hours'.

Answer: reading

💡 'Has been' are helping verbs; 'reading' is the main verb.
