Rules

1. One independent clause + at least one dependent clause. 2. Dependent clauses begin with subordinators (because, although, when, if, who, which, that). 3. If the dependent clause comes first, a comma follows it. 4. The dependent clause cannot stand alone.

Explanation

"She smiled when she saw me" — the main idea is "She smiled"; "when she saw me" cannot stand alone.
